Data Privacy Policy

Summary

The Barrier Tracker app can be used anonymously and without registration. The process of recording the location of barriers requires the app to access your camera, photo gallery and record your location. With the app you can submit as many barrier location records as you wish, and you can also withdraw your data at any time by contacting info@fishmigration.org

Definitions:

Barrier data: GPS location, date and time of record, photograph of barrier, location name, barrier type and sub-type and a number of other optional data relating to the barrier and water course. This does not include any personal data. Barrier data may be made publicly available.

User data: Information collected only if the user chooses to register in the app or online. This consists of some personal information i.e. recorder name, email address, username and skill level in identification of barrier features. This data is tightly restricted to the app creators (Natural Apptitude Ltd) and AMBER project members who require to use it, following strict data protection regulations. Personal data i.e. name and email address, will not be displayed anywhere publicly.

What data will be collected?

When registering as a user, the app will need to collect both barrier data and user data as described in the definitions above. Your contact details will not be shared with anyone else, and the AMBER project will only contact you by email with e.g. the project newsletter, important project information, if you request a new password or if we need further details about one of your records.

Your username will be used to credit the photographs you submit, if we feature them on the project website, social media or project materials. It may also be used in the projects leader boards. Your records may be included on the AMBER website, which will allow people to see the barriers that have been recorded as part of the project. We thus recommend that your username is not the same or similar to your real name and does not allow you to be identified.

Where will the data be held and for how long?

Data submitted to the Barrier Tracker project will be held in several locations by the project team over the life of the project. Your records are submitted directly to a system called Coreo which is a secure, online, UK-hosted database and user/record management system managed by the project’s technical partner, Natural Apptitude. Data will be stored in Coreo for the lifetime of the AMBER project and records will be verified there. From Coreo, verified records will be imported by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) for use in the Barrier Atlas – a collation of all known barriers within Europe. The Joint Research Centre (JRC) will hold barrier records following the conclusion of the AMBER project in order to maintain the pan-European barrier Atlas. Personal data will not be issued or sold to any third party and will not be used for any purpose other than the functioning of the barrier atlas. You are able to withdraw your data at any time, by contacting info@fishmigration.org.

Who will have access to the data and for what purpose?

The AMBER project team and Natural Apptitude will have access to the data submitted. Data will be verified by staff at the World Fish Migration Foundation, before it is made available to JRC. Findings will be presented in a range of outputs, potentially including the Barrier Atlas, academic journals, magazines, project summaries, blog posts, infographics, leaflets, policy briefs and email newsletters. This will help improve scientific understanding of the impact of barriers across Europe. Members of the general public will also have access to records via the AMBER website, although record data will be summarised and will not include your personal information.
